I found these demos on the front end of the tape the World demo came from. I forgot they existed. They were not filmed in NY. But in a long convoluted way, sort of have something to do with Long Island. These might have originally came from Greg Chapman's cousin, Jarred, one of the original Number Nine team riders. Maybe Lou Dorley had a copy and I dubbed it from him. My memory of this footage is about as hazy as this glitched VHS footage. It doesn't really matter. Who wouldn't want to watch these two skate during their prime years.

SLP VHS

My parent's would occasionally come up on a 3+1 blank VHS pack. Those things were costly back then at five to six dollars each. They would be generous and give me one of tapes for my own personal use. You had three recording speeds to choose from; SP,LP or SLP (short play/long play/super long play). In these days the VCR was always set to SLP. That gave you six whole hours of Skate TV excerpts, new wave & punk videos from 120 Minutes, dubbed skate videos your friends or Blockbuster would have and maybe even some crap footage of yourself trying to poorly ollie a garbage can.
This demo was either June 1989 or 1990. It might have been one of the last demos at Danny's Ride Away that had obstacles. I was there with my friend Cal (who worshipped Jeremy Klein) and my friend Brian Kushner.
This is a 2nd or 3rd generation dub of a tape shot by Mrs. Bruhl, the mother of some of our skate crew, The Bruhl Clan (Danny, Critter & Dave). They rocked rat tails. I think she did an excellent job for a mom with a VHS camera at a skate demo.
I remember Cal was scared to talk to Jeremy Klein who was sitting all alone on his board so I went and talked to him. He was nice to me and I found out he had a severed nerve in his arm from falling through a window fucking around (not skating). A foreshadowing of a Klein we would discover much later when he was lipsliding barns on fire and driving a van down the El Toro stairs. Someone also robbed his board after the demo and he was bummed cause he had new Swiss bearings. It was probably BSA.
This may have been the demo Rodney Mullen was rude to John Oswald at. I know the old school Bay Shore cats were there cause we knew who they were from skating Babylon and I saw Ron from the city in the crowd. I think The Ronz and Gino were there but I didn't know who they were until later on a bit at Skateboard Madness...

New Skool Demos Part 2

New Skool was good. As Pheo said there was often good demos. There was a 3 foot indoor mini & they used to let us take all the flat bars & boxes out behind the building whenever we wanted to. Some of the familiar faces that worked there over the years were; Jon Pierre Vargas, Anthony Pappalardo, Mike Lent and I think Steve Fletch. Keith Denley & Quinn Sherman were the resident groms.
I don't remember the A-Team demo. I don't think Pheo remembers this demo. I have some very dusty stills from a Firm demo. This was back when Frank Gerwer was in their gang. 5boro showed up in a beater Mercedes station wagon (I think) with vanity plates that said '5boro'. I think Tato ollied off a flat bank ramp over a folding table standing up. Something like that. These facts could be very blurred. I never even did drugs I'm just burnt...I also have a Shorty's demo on video I will find at some time and post....

I'm sure I'm opening a slew of tales with this. There must be other analog VHS, 8mm & VHSC tapes stored in Airwalk Enigma or Vans Caballero shoe boxes buried amongst Christmas decorations and old appliances in parent's attics or basements.
We may have taken a bus there on this day or someone's parent could have dropped us off. Finding out about a demo was pure chance back then. There were no message boards, emails or Myspace to advertise the event. It was myself and my friend Angelo and I think Rich and Jimmy Long were there because I think I hear Jimmy's voice off camera talking to me (Rich was Richie back then and never spoke at all-he was probably 11). Maybe the Long brothers weren't even there. Rich will have to clarify.
Danny's Ride Away cheaped out this time and instead of having the various pieces of pvc pipe boxes and slider bars and jump ramps, they had a wood pallet.
Shown here are Rodney Mullen & Brian Lotti. Also at the demo was Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson & Tim Gavin. They didn't skate, though. Tim Gavin made a few attempts at a backside heelflip-noseblunt-slide on the pallet but didn't pull it. Someone go learn that trick now.
All I know is it was the first time I ever saw someone wear Adidas Campus to skate. If you listen there is actually a comment made off camera about it. We all raided Kaddy Kan after this for $10 or $20 deadstock Puma and Adidas. I'm pretty sure 'Tim & Henry's Pack of Lies' was at the store that day and my friend Angelo scored a copy. Early 90's, bad oversized clothing, PRT bumping out of someone's car stereo-brilliant times that remind me of fun.
If you pay attention you might see yourself or some familiar faces...

The bloody head footy ... i fell nobody knew i was on the second level of the parking gararge . from what i been told they heard me fall it was like thunder from thore's hammer hitting the floor of T.O.B . i rolled my fat ass down the hill and was total out cold , i heard frank found me and picked me up off the ground ? he's like 120lb wet . go frank !! i was really out of it. i didn;t know were i was. frank and davis didn't know what to do so they brought me over to the local bar to find my parents . i ended up in the hospital for four days. my mother and dad and my lil brother came by once one of thoses four days , nobody eles came to visted me and my broken head . thanks !

I probably had not made my way to T.O.B. until '93 when I had a car. I lived on the south shore so if it wasn't on the Babylon LIRR line or a near by bus ride away, I probably hadn't been there. I missed the days of T.O.B. being a mecca, but didn't miss out on plenty of good skate sessions there. It was mostly a night time stop. Maybe after Y.O.M. was over for the evening on the weekend or a mid-week night session. The toast of the evening was always to walk up to the top and bomb down the parking garage.

Anyway, here are some old pics of Nick Katsoulas. He was one of 55 Duffy's 2nd generation. Always a ripper and a good time to skate with. All pics shot in one afternoon on maybe two rolls of film. Only the first one is at T.O.B but that's OK.

THIS WAS A PLACE WERE ME AND MY FRIENDS MIKE AND MAT WOULD GO SKATE BACK IN 85 .
IT WAS ARE SPOT ! IT HAD CURBS AND MANNY PADS HILLS THERE WAS A SIX STEP WITH HUBBAS , IT WAS OUR EMB before WE knew about EMB .
AND THERE IT WAS THIS GIANT WAX OWL CANDLE CHRIS SACCO STOLE FROM HIS MOTHER . I USED IT TO WAX THE SHIT OUT OF T.O.B AND IT ALL STARTED FROM THERE . THE WAX OWL CURBS WERE A HIT . NEXT THING WE KNEW KIDS FROM ALL OVER WERE SKATING OUR GARAGE , I'VE MEET MANY NEW SKATE FRIENDS . THERE SUCH A NEIL MORGAN . HE WAS A TOTAL DICK AT FIRST .
